U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved Restylane® injectable gel is a cosmetic "dermal filler" that contains hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance that is found in the body. HA gives volume and elasticity to the skin, but as the body ages, HA levels decrease, resulting in loose skin and wrinkling. When injected, Restylane gel is designed to add volume to plump the skin beneath lines and wrinkles and smoothing them out.

What Areas Can Dermal Fillers Treat?

Dermal fillers provide a non-surgical, minimally invasive approach to restoring a more youthful and revitalized facial appearance.  Some of the most common aesthetic concerns that can be treated with dermal fillers include:

  • Smile lines
  • Lips
  • Wrinkles
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Cheeks
  • Jawline
  • Marionette lines
  • Temples

Who Is A Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Ideal candidates for dermal fillers are individuals looking to address signs of facial aging and/or to enhance particular facial features without having to undergo surgery.  Patients should be in good general health and understand that, although dermal fillers can create exceptional results when performed safely and correctly, treatment may be needed to be repeated on a regular basis to maintain an optimal outcome.

Other considerations:

  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • No workouts for 48 hours after
  • No dental appointments (including cleanings) 2 weeks before or after
  • No surgeries 2 weeks before or after
  • No antibiotics within 2 weeks of treatment
  • No vaccinations for 2 weeks before or after
  • No travel for 72 hours after
  • No active cold sores

Side Effects of Dermal Fillers

The most common side effects of dermal fillers include mild swelling and potential redness in the targeted areas. Issues like bruising and lingering discomfort are rare and the vast majority of individuals are able to resume normal, non-strenuous daily routines immediately after treatment.
